Chapter One Edit

Max’s heart thudded in his chest. He looked at his clock. It read, 8:45 AM. Still not time. He looked at his calendar, clearly marked today as “Max’s 14th Birthday”. He was literally ripping his sheets in half, and it felt as if something was eating from the inside. He could not wait any longer. He leaped out of bed, and he rushed into his closet and changed his clothes faster than he had ever done before. He snuck around the hallway, and he could smell the 30-second cake wafting into his nostrils. He let his feet take him to the kitchen, and he could see all of the décor set up for him. He let his shoulders drop and his eyes droop. He pretended to walk into the kitchen tired, even faking a yawn. “Surprise!” His friends and family shook their hands in the air. He jumped, even though he thought he was prepared. “Happy Birthday, Max!” He walked to an open chair, and his mother pushed the cake over to him, with 14 flickering candles dancing around. He breathed in a large breath and blew the candles out. They cheered, and he smiled. “Hey, Max I know you’ll like my gift!” His friend Garrett exclaimed. “I’m sure I will!” Max laughed.

Max had got amazing gifts. But his mother surprised him after the guests had left. “Max, I have something from your father.” Max froze. He had not heard the word father in a long time. He hadn’t heard it in what seemed like forever. “It’s his old journal. He told me to give it to you on your 14th Birthday.” The book was old and faded. “Where is the screen?” “It doesn’t have one. It’s from when he first built the city.” Max looked at it. It had a strange looking gear design, and was a faded brown. “I told him it wasn’t important for you to have, but he insisted on giving it to you. It was after that, well… He disappeared. He might’ve fallen over The Edge. You know he loved you.” Max closed his eyes. “Leave it on my bed. I’m going out.” He sighed. He grabbed his board, and he walked outside. A cloud floated across the yard and he ran through it. He strapped himself on his board and jumped off The Edge. He dropped, and he felt his body slow, and he was calibrated to the sky. The city was busy as usual, and he took his normal route around the city’s edge to the repair yard. He could see a car in the garage, and he saw his friend Rowan working on it. He slowed and flew into the garage. Rowan slid out from the bottom of the car.

“Hi, Max! Sorry I couldn’t come to the part’. Was busy on an emergency breakdown.”

“What kind?” Max inquired.

“Hovergrav failure.” Rowan answered.

Max slid under the car with Rowan. He saw that the wire had been frayed in an accident.

“Looks serious. How much money did you get paid for the repairs?”

“500G’s.”

“Good price!”

They laughed.

“Hey, I got a gift for ya.” He handed Max an oddly wrapped gift. Max opened the weird present. A gun with a hook was beneath the wrapping. “So this is…”

“A grappling hook. You know, in case you ever need it.” Rowan told him.

“You always get the most random and, mildly violent, gifts!” Max joked.

“Hey, you just never know!” Rowan laughed.

They laughed.

Max walked into his room and threw his board on the floor and he sat on his bed. He felt a lump and he got up and looked. His father’s old, faded book was sitting on the bed. He put it on his bookshelf, on the ‘download’ section. A hologram displayed the percentage of the download. It said 0% complete. He put his pajamas on and laid down on his bed. He slid a visor over his eyes and clapped. The lights dimmed and he slid into a deep sleep.
